We’ve had our kids in the kitchen with us for a very long time. They’re not wunderkinds like those culinary geniuses on Master Chef Junior, but they can feed themselves.
While we felt it was important for them to be able to cook and bake, I’ll be honest, one of the reasons we got them into the kitchen is they are all very picky. Samara decided to become a vegetarian when she was 9, Isaac likes spicy food, Shoshana doesn’t like spicy food, and there are both gluten-sensitivities and a milk and casein issues in our house. There were several years where we were making three separate things for dinner each night. I wish this was an exaggeration, but it’s not.
Though it took a great deal of time to teach them to cook and bake on their own- many demonstrations, guided practices, lots of supervising, some assistance, and a few failed cakes -the pay off has been worth it. Now the kids feel pretty confident in the kitchen and sometimes after their school work is done, the culinary muses will strike them (mostly Samara and Shoshana) and they’ll get into the kitchen and make a chocolate cake from scratch.
We started this food blog with the kids in mind. For them to learn more about the food we eat, but also for them to become competent, confident home cooks. Thus far, we’ve been successful. However, we’ve yet to show that here. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is that they have been going full throttle with school this year. But now they are (officially) done.

Samara likes to make pumpkin muffins year round.
Since they’ve met their required school hours for the year, I’m going to expect more contributions from them. Truth be told, they already cook a lot as you can see from some of the very few pics I’ve posted above, it’s just getting food blog-worthy pics of the foods they make is nearly impossible. They eat it all up. I don’t know how many times Isaac has made banana sorbet, but I’ve never once been able to photograph because it’s usually gone by the time the sun is up the next day.

Samara made a huge cookie for her birthday party.
But we’re going to work on not eating all their wonderful efforts before I can snap photos and whenever that happens, we’ll share the results here and label them Kitchen Kids.
