Late Spring Update

Just wanted to give a quick update on what’s been going on with me and mine.

Homeschool– In exactly two weeks, all three of my kids will be starting high school and then seven-ish weeks after that some college classes. I have been busy working on the syllabi for the courses I’m responsible for- Ninth Grade English (Ancient Literature), Ancient History, Mythology, and Geography. It’s a lot of work, but I know it will be worth it.

Ballet– The girls and I are also working on a ballet syllabus. On Monday, we went and danced for an hour together and had a blast. They have had nine years of ballet (this year starts their tenth) and it’s amazing to see their growth and confidence. I put on some ballet music and they were making up floor combinations like it was second nature to them. Jete, jete, jete, pas de chat, pas de chat, assemble, saute, arabesque. Then they’d change it up just to see how different moves felt to the same music. I think they can now call themselves Dancers.

Novel Writing– I have been “noveling” lately. I think I’m probably a very weird writer as I like to draft and then relentlessly revise and edit to get it to the highest possible point before going forward with new chapters. I find this helps with the unevenness of which so many literary novels are prone. For one novel, I have 103 pages (almost 30,000 words) of near “perfection.” I recently had an epiphany about a character, so I’m excited to get back to drafting on that one. For another novel, I realized how to make it more Southern Gothic and far more interesting, so I’ve been revising/editing with that in mind. For that one, I’m 54 pages into that revision.

Recipes– I’ve been working on new recipes, too. One is coming tomorrow and I need to work on some gluten-free galette crust tonight, so I can bring another new one here.

Gardening– We have had some nice, heavy rains lately- gully washers I like to call them- and that means things I’ve planted are going crazy.

amaranth

Golden Amaranth needing to be thinned. I think I’ll thin it and use the leaves in a recipe and let the rest grow to full size.

winter squash leaf

Winter Squash Leaf. I swear this thing grows overnight. I wish I could set up a time-lapsed camera and watch the progress that way. Note: I put a penny on it to show how big it is.

ElsewhereBecause Yum was included in a recipe round up about summer fitness and accompanying recipes. Even before this post, my Bedtime Smoothie recipe is one of the most popular recipes I’ve ever made.
